A City is its People

We love the intensity of these places! They give Michigan character. It’s the living memory of our automotive heritage celebrated on America’s first highway every year through the Woodward Dream Cruise. It’s the dozen different languages we hear chattering in cafes in Dearborn. It’s the thousand calories we guiltlessly indulge in on “paczki day” in Hamtramck. It’s the smile from a stranger at the library in Roseville, the welcoming handshake from the mayor in Southgate. It’s our neighbors and everything they do that give this places its unique sense of place.

At the Suburbs Alliance, we bring cities together to solve the region’s most pressing challenges, and our municipal members play a key role in setting our priorities and direction. When your community becomes a member of the Suburbs Alliance, you’re also becoming a leader in the region.

Chat with the Chair: RTA’s Paul Hillegonds

Now that the RTA has named a CEO, how will they tackle the task of unifying and expanding public transit in a disconnected region? Last week we sat down with Paul Hillegonds, chairman of the RTA, to discuss the future landscape of transit. He held nothing back, including an inspiring long-standing optimism for southeast Michigan.

The Wheels are about to Fall off the Bus

At our last Mayors & Managers, we heard from MDOT, SEMCOG and the RTA about the statewide transportation funding crisis. Facing a $1.5 billion shortfall, how can Michigan maintain our current infrastructure and move forward?

City Spotlight: “Rediscover Oak Park”

On July 16, Oak Park City Council lifted the citywide ban on liquor licenses, a law that has been in place for almost 70 years. Ditching its status as a ‘dry’ city is one of many steps that Oak Park is taking to become a more vibrant city under the guidance of City Manager Erik Tungate. We sat down with him recently to get the scoop on Oak Park’s past, present and future.
